POWERNET was an FP6 project within the European framework programme, with a small set of partners with the specific expertise suited to realise the Cognitive Broadband over Powelines (CBPL) system.
Duration of the project: 1 Nov. 2005 to 31 Mar. 2007 (2 years).
The project had an ambitious project objective of design and development CBPL system within in one year for first level of field trials (with off-the-shelf components) so as to confirm the design validation and to develop ASIC for the analog front end, which is one of the complex part of the planned CBPL system.
Based on the successful trials in the first year, analog ASIC was designed and the fabricated ASICs were tested and integrated to new CBPL system with cogntitive algorithms and error correction schemes to improve the performance of the CBPL system.
The trials were conducted by deploying the new CBPL demonstration units in the field and measurements were done to demonstrate the improved performance of the system.
The main target of dissemination was however the IEEE P1901 standardization activities. The project results have been integrated to the retained standards discussions in the working group.
The partners have submitted 3 patents (ACN 2 and IMEC: 1). Thus POWERNET is one of the important innovative project, realising valuable IPR increasing their business activity potential and value of the company.
